  19. <p>     Francesca Johnson, the melancholy heroine of the maudlin, best-selling
  20. book The Bridges of Madison County, is described by the author
  21. as a woman who "wore ribbons in her black hair and clung to
  22. her dreams." A film version of the Robert James Waller novel
  23. has been planned for months, and the role of this Iowa farmwife
  24. has become one of the most coveted in Hollywood. Jessica Lange,
  25. Isabella Rossellini and Anjelica Huston, among others, had been
  26. up for the part of the woman who finds passion with a roving
  27. photographer while her husband is at a state fair. Clint Eastwood,
  28. who will direct the film and play the middle-aged Romeo, finally
  29. has a Francesca: MERYL STREEP The actress last week admitted
  30. she didn't like the book, "but that just may be me." She added,
  31. though, that "the script is wonderful."

  33. <p>     "There Is a Problem Inside"
  34. </p>
  35. <p>     Two years ago, the famously well-mannered JIM COURIER was the
  36. top-ranked tennis player in the world. Ever since, he has been
  37. slipping: last year he fell to No. 3, and now he is ranked 10th.
  38. After an unsettling defeat by a little-known Spaniard named
  39. Alex Corretja at the RCA championships last week, Courier announced
  40. he is leaving tennis indefinitely. "There is a problem inside,"
  41. he explained. "I'm really not sure what it is, and the only
  42. way to figure it out is just to take a step away." Courier said
  43. he would return when "I am hungry to come back and play."

  45. <p>     Trading Blonds?

  47. <p>     JOHN F. KENNEDY JR. is apparently not yet ready to relinquish
  48. the manifold benefits attending his status as the world's most
  49. blessed bachelor. According to tabloid reports, J.F.K. Jr. and
  50. nature girl DARYL HANNAH (with whom he was photographed while
  51. on vacation earlier this summer) have ended their multiyear
  52. relationship for good because the man with the most understandable
  53. reasons for commitment phobia won't marry. Since the breakup,
  54. he's been seen on Martha's Vineyard with a new, unnamed blond
  55. beauty. Alas, she isn't Princess Diana, who has also been enjoying
  56. a holiday on the Massachusetts island.

  58. <p>     SEEN & HEARD
  59. </p>
  60. <p>     CHELSEA CLINTON has been liberated from more than her braces
  61. this summer. Flashing a wide, metal-free smile, Washington's
  62. most famous teenager broke loose from the Beltway to spend a
  63. few days at a Newport, Rhode Island, sailing school. "We've
  64. tried to treat her just like any student," said the school's
  65. director, "and she's been super."

  67. <p>     It was predictable that the world's most celebrated newlyweds
  68. would soon experience rockiness. The judge who married MICHAEL
  69. JACKSON and LISA MARIE PRESLEY in the Dominican Republic says
  70. the union could be "challenged" because Lisa Marie's divorce
  71. from Danny Keough wasn't published in Dominican newspapers,
  72. as required by that country's law. In other Jackson-family news:
  73. Michael's brother Jermaine will perform at a concert in England
  74. sponsored by the Church of Scientology, the religious group
  75. to which Lisa Marie belongs.
