-
Search for Francesca
-

-
Francesca Johnson, the melancholy heroine of the maudlin, best-selling
- book The Bridges of Madison County, is described by the author
- as a woman who "wore ribbons in her black hair and clung to
- her dreams." A film version of the Robert James Waller novel
- has been planned for months, and the role of this Iowa farmwife
- has become one of the most coveted in Hollywood. Jessica Lange,
- Isabella Rossellini and Anjelica Huston, among others, had been
- up for the part of the woman who finds passion with a roving
- photographer while her husband is at a state fair. Clint Eastwood,
- who will direct the film and play the middle-aged Romeo, finally
- has a Francesca: MERYL STREEP The actress last week admitted
- she didn't like the book, "but that just may be me." She added,
- though, that "the script is wonderful."

-
"There Is a Problem Inside"
-

-
Two years ago, the famously well-mannered JIM COURIER was the
- top-ranked tennis player in the world. Ever since, he has been
- slipping: last year he fell to No. 3, and now he is ranked 10th.
- After an unsettling defeat by a little-known Spaniard named
- Alex Corretja at the RCA championships last week, Courier announced
- he is leaving tennis indefinitely. "There is a problem inside,"
- he explained. "I'm really not sure what it is, and the only
- way to figure it out is just to take a step away." Courier said
- he would return when "I am hungry to come back and play."

-
Trading Blonds?
-

-
JOHN F. KENNEDY JR. is apparently not yet ready to relinquish
- the manifold benefits attending his status as the world's most
- blessed bachelor. According to tabloid reports, J.F.K. Jr. and
- nature girl DARYL HANNAH (with whom he was photographed while
- on vacation earlier this summer) have ended their multiyear
- relationship for good because the man with the most understandable
- reasons for commitment phobia won't marry. Since the breakup,
- he's been seen on Martha's Vineyard with a new, unnamed blond
- beauty. Alas, she isn't Princess Diana, who has also been enjoying
- a holiday on the Massachusetts island.

-
SEEN & HEARD
-

-
CHELSEA CLINTON has been liberated from more than her braces
- this summer. Flashing a wide, metal-free smile, Washington's
- most famous teenager broke loose from the Beltway to spend a
- few days at a Newport, Rhode Island, sailing school. "We've
- tried to treat her just like any student," said the school's
- director, "and she's been super."

-
It was predictable that the world's most celebrated newlyweds
- would soon experience rockiness. The judge who married MICHAEL
- JACKSON and LISA MARIE PRESLEY in the Dominican Republic says
- the union could be "challenged" because Lisa Marie's divorce
- from Danny Keough wasn't published in Dominican newspapers,
- as required by that country's law. In other Jackson-family news:
- Michael's brother Jermaine will perform at a concert in England
- sponsored by the Church of Scientology, the religious group
- to which Lisa Marie belongs.
